“Parliament Doesn’t Have to Listen to Us”: Malarndirri McCarthy

9 October 2023

Prominent Yes campaigner Senator Malarndirri McCarthy has laid out the difficulty of securing a “Yes” vote in the upcoming Voice to Parliament referendum.

“You’re dealing with a country that is very conservative, one that is very difficult to progress in terms of First Nations issues”, the senator told Koori Radio’s Lola Forester.

With only a couple of days to go until Australia votes in the referendum, Senator McCarthy outlined her belief that a Voice will prompt parliament to be more open and transparent with the decisions it makes.

“At the moment parliament doesn’t have to listen to us. If we have the Voice, and if advice is given, whether parliament takes it or not they have to be accountable.”

The Senator for the NT visited Koori Radio’s studio in Redfern after an event with other Yes campaigners.
